Why choose Jacob Lamb from Fordmore Farm Shop?
Jacob lamb offers tender, juicy meat with a rich depth of flavour that isn’t overpowering. Grass-fed from start to finish, it’s both a healthy and delicious choice.
All of the lamb we are selling on our butcher counter this Easter is from our own flock of Jacobs which are slow-grown and roam on organic pasture at our farm in Plymtree.
Jacobs are a very old breed, thought to originate from the Middle East, with biblical references dating back to the Old Testament. The earliest record in modern times is from the mid-eighteenth century, when a black and white ram and several ewes were shipped from Portugal to England.
Our flock of ewes graze on organic pastures and we lamb from the 140-strong flock every January and March. Although they are bred to organic standards, we do not believe in transporting them long distances to organic abattoirs, so we use a non-organic abattoir in nearby Ottery St Mary. This is both to reduce the impact on the animals of travelling long distances and to keep food miles as low as possible.
Drop in and ask about how we breed our animals, discover the story behind our flock, and enjoy lamb that’s been carefully reared from field to fork.
